“God made my life complete when I placed all the pieces before him.” – Psalm 18:20 MSG
I remember when the movie Jerry Maguire came out and all the girls went drooly-faced and weak-kneed over Tom Cruise saying to Renee Zellwegger, “You complete me.” The truth is that nobody completes us except God. We can have friends, lovers, even spouses that balance us, complement us, and make us better than we are without them. But ONLY God completes us. And that’s because only God knows that the puzzle of our life is supposed to look like when it’s put together.
Last winter, I went to a ladies’ retreat at the beach and the leader gave the example of how for many, many years, she felt shattered–like broken glass strewn across a floor. But God takes the broken fragments of our lives–the fathers who have left, the men who have mistreated us, the mistakes we have made–and puts them back together in a way that only He can. And when He’s done, He shines His light through us and reveals the beauty of a stained-glass window.
Only God can do that. Only God. But we have to be willing to hand Him all of the pieces and say, “God, I will take my hands off of these pieces and let You put them together in whatever way You want to.” Sometimes, we think He’s messing it up. But still, He can only do His work if we take our hands off. And in the end, it will be worth it.
